two Quickbooks 2009 questions?

August 15th, 2009

I am starting up my own consulting business. I’m not an idiot, but am having trouble with a couple of Quickbooks issues. I know very little about accounting, but I do have a degree in electrical engineering so I really am not an imbecile.

First, to keep track of business expenses for tax purposes related to my new consulting business, I am trying to input all the expenses I have already paid (laptop, software, paper, printer, postage, legal paperwork, etc.) to have Quickbooks keep track of it all. I have already paid for these expenses using an account that is not related to my business bank account (just set up my business bank account, so it wasn’t even in existence when I paid for these earlier expenses). When I try to input all these items into Quickbooks, it insists that I need pay them - but they’ve already been paid. How do I input them just for record keeping purposes only.

Also, some of my expenses (postage, photocopy/binding) are going to be passed through to my customers at a 30% markup. How do I get Quickbooks to do that?

Thank you!

You can do a General Journal Entry for expenses all ready paid as follows:

Debit all you expenses

Credit an Equity Account called Owner’s Contribution in the same amount as the total of all your expenses.

As far as the second question, are you going to be able to exactly attribute these expenses to a particular customer and job or are they part of your overhead?

If the former, then set up items for each of the expenses you are going to pass to your customer. These items will be of the type "other charges" and you will assign them to an Income account. Do not assign an amount to the item. When you enter on your invoice, enter the exact amount of the expense*1.3 to get the amount billed to your customer.

I hope this helps. email me at natejack2@hotmail.com if you want to discuss further. I enjoy talking about QB issues.

can i use a business laptop from DELL at home?

August 15th, 2009

i want to buy a laptop from dell for home use and the only good ones are business laptops. can i buy one and use it at home for stuff like the internet and games?

Yes - business is just a name. If you buy it yourself you can do whatever you want with it.

My laptop is business is not picking up. Suggest me some measures to promote my business online and offline?

August 15th, 2009

I have started an laptop business 14 days back but I have not got the response which I hoped for. I am trying to pass on maximum benefit to customers, giving them best rates and regularly updating them.

The problem with our business is that we are not so strong financially so we are unable to keep demo laptops in office and customer asks demo pieces sometimes. Well I don’t think so that it’s a big problem…

Now I want to re-create my marketing strategy. Kindly suggest me some measures. I will be oblidged. Thanks!

Always listen to the customer - if demos are what they ask for then that is where your marketing money should go. We opened a floral shop with very little capitol - our biggest marketing tool was to donate to every charity - your name goes on their news list and sometimes we just donated $10 - we also donated our services and product to the chinese auctions and other charity events around the county - then our name was announced to the public and our services were used creating word of mouth customers. It always cost less than traditional advertising. And members always tried to use donators services first when in need of a product.

What do you think of Obama’s new laws allowing the gov’t to search and seize your laptop at any border?

August 8th, 2009

"In extreme secrecy from the public, the Obama administration is hammering out an international treaty with other several other countries and the EU ……under ACTA, the government will get sweeping new powers to search and seize material thought to be in breach of copyright. But why all the secrecy? What it will do on a larger scale is let big brother watch you; however, this time on a completely different level."

"Border guards will be given unprecedented powers to search travelers without warning. They will be able to go through and confiscate any material a person has on their laptop."

"America is being overtaken by a culture of surveillance."

Can you imagine if Bush did anything remotely close to this?

http://atlasshrugs2000.typepad.com/atlas_shrugs/2009/08/obama-passing-new-law-to-allow-searching-of-pcs-laptops-and-media-devices.html

Business travellers carry laptaps with proprietary information routinely. Legislation which will legalize arbitrary search/siezure of computer files is a clear cut breach of confidentiality and first amendment rights.

Ridiculous, and typical…..just a hint of things to come. Looks all that’s happening now. We’re sunk and have to fight it !!!!!

what should a good business laptop have installed? same question to a personal laptopTOP?

August 8th, 2009

what is the difference between a personal & business laptop? and how the speed/RAM/Harddisk between the two should be compared.

One is purchsed BY a company for a staff member to use and has the software installed that the COMPANY deems their empÄloyee needs.

The other is bought by an individual and has the software they WANT on it.

Hardware wise, no difference, as it depends what the individual needs are . . . what I need for work are less than I use personally, but SOME poeple need more power for work than at home !

So the question is therefore pretty much unanswerable

Can’t you use business laptops for home/college?

August 8th, 2009

Dell’s site is divided into home/business. But the business laptops like Latitude can actually be configured well to what I desire (2.4GHc C2D 3MB L2, 4GB RAM, 120GB 7200 rpm, 256 MB Video). Can’t I just use that for my college? Why is so strictly classified under business???

Originally, the Inspirons were the consumer line of laptops that were more mutlimedia and entertainment oriented, and the Latitudes were designed to be business laptops that were more rugged, had networking capabilities, and no frills like special cases. But the lines have overlapped quite a bit. I think the latitudes still tend to be more sturdy built whereas the Inspirons feel "less solid".
And now there’s also the XPS line with are suppose to be fully loaded high end systems.

But now, the main differences between the different lines is software options, warranty, and ordering methods. Ordering through the business line requires an account, and especially if it’s a large business making lots of orders get special treatment from the salespeople.
